    SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

    The Buildings & Grounds Crewmember is an important role in the Buildings & Grounds Department. The Crewmember is responsible for creating a clean, safe, disinfected and comfortable environment for the National Aviary’s Animal collection, visitors, and staff. The Crewmember directly affects the Visitor Experience and the working conditions of staff.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Performs major cleaning and disinfecting of assigned areas; cleans and maintains buildings, furnishings, ground and property.
    • Performs daily floor maintenance of all main hallways and visitor space areas.
    • Cleans, sanitizes and disinfects restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; washes windows, mirrors and walls; monitors and maintains adequate supplies in the restrooms
    • Adheres to sanitization practices and schedules as directed
    • Empties, sanitizes and deodorizes trash and recycling containers.
    • Cleans and dusts furniture, air vents, doorframes, doors, walls, windows and window blinds, mirrors and baseboards.
    • Identifies and reports building maintenance needs throughout the facilities
    • Completes special cleaning details as requested.
    • Assists with daytime events: moves and arranges furniture; opens and secures buildings; locks entrances, exits, doors and other mechanisms in Aviary buildings.
    • When working evening events:
      • Sets up and breaks down events, including moving equipment (tables, chairs, benches, trash/ recycling receptacles, pop tents, portable lamp posts, sound systems, and extension cords); opens and secures buildings; locks entrances, exits, doors and other mechanisms in Aviary facility.
      • Adheres to event guidelines and follows direction from events staff during all events to ensure high visitor satisfaction.
      • Performs frequent rounds of visitor spaces, discreetly tidying and pulling trash/ recycling as necessary.
    • Works with Animal Programs in the cleaning and maintenance of off-exhibit holding.
    • Performs landscaping duties, as needed, including maintenance of grounds, parking lot, sidewalks, and snow removal.
    • Assists with other departments, including but not limited to special events, as needed to support operations
    • Adheres to all National Aviary protocols and procedures
    • Interacts with visitors utilizing National Aviary Visitor Engagement protocol
    • Adheres to and models National Aviary and OSHA safety policies including, but not limited to disinfection procedures, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) compliance, Hazard Communication, PPE, Infection Control and others as identified.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee constantly positions self to complete cleaning projects, including under and around equipment and furniture. The employee occasionally operates hand and power equipment.

    DESCRIPTION:

    The National Aviary is home to one of Pittsburgh’s best new events venues! Our events team is dedicated to providing high-quality events working mainly in our newest event space, The Garden Room, which opened in 2020. As an Events Coordinator, you can learn how to create unique events in a nonprofit environment.

    The Event Coordinator will have the opportunity to work on events ranging from weddings and showers, to bar and bat mitzvah celebrations, and corporate occasions. You’ll be a part of a dedicated team that provides our guests with a stress-free event. As an Event Coordinator, you will bring the guest’s vision to life while supporting the National Aviary’s work to save birds and protect their habitats.

    We support new team members with customized job training. The average day will consist of supervising all aspects of hosting on-site internal and external private and special events. This includes site tours, creation of seating charts, coordination and communication with our Food & Beverage supplier and other vendors, and assisting the Director of Guest Operations and Events as needed.  We invite you to join an innovative team using your event planning experience.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Acts as night of coordinator supervising events including weddings, corporate events, and private parties occurring on weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
    • Supervises all aspects of hosting on-site private and special events including, but not limited to: providing event layouts to National Aviary Staff prior to the event and overseeing set-up on day of; coordinating vendors & deliveries (floral, décor, other) and valet parking if appropriate; servicing clients’ and guests’ needs throughout their events; supervising staff on site during event to ensure customer service, safety, and cleanliness standards are consistently upheld.
    • Coordinates and communicates with Food & Beverage provider
    • Assists with set up and teardown, if necessary.
    • Provides support and acts as back up to Events Coordinators and Director of Guest Operations and Events
    • Closes and secures building at the event’s conclusion.
    • Coordinates and maintains all documents related to special events including but not limited to, contracts and insurance documents with third parties and after event reporting.
    • Maintains accurate records related to facility rentals and special events.
    • Accurately and efficiently produces seating charts for events using Prismm software.
    • Communicates with clients and internal stakeholders regarding seating charts in a timely fashion.
    • Handles inquiries regarding facility rentals by answering phone calls, immediately returning voicemails, emails and web based inquiries; inquiries including pricing, available space, date availability, bird encounters, catering, etc..
    • Meets with potential clients and conducts facility tours highlighting the National Aviary’s unique attributes as a private event venue.
    • Performs general daily administrative duties and assists with other departmental requests.
    • Assists in maintaining budget for facility rental expenses and for meeting department revenue goals.
    • Serves as a Responsible Party; adheres to all National Aviary policies and protocols.
    • Communicates with Incident Commander when necessary.
    • Interacts with visitors utilizing National Aviary Visitor Engagement protocol.

  • Educator Summer Camp (Seasonal)

    SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

    The National Aviary’s Seasonal Educator – Summer Camp is part of a dynamic and energetic Education Department performing all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the National Aviary’s mission to inspire a respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. The Seasonal Educator – Summer Camp will work alongside regular full-time National Aviary staff, interns, and volunteers to provide a safe, fun, engaging, and inclusive summer camp experience for children ages 2-12, teens, and adults. During summer camp, the Seasonal Educator will teach science content in National Aviary classroom spaces, habitat areas, and outdoors and will support a positive and fun learning environment for all campers. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Responsible for the day-to-day set up, delivery, and clean-up of Aviary summer camp activities for the duration of the season.
    • Works with the summer camp team to assess the success of summer camp activities and provides feedback for adjustment as needed.
    • Prior to camp starting, works with the team to develop lesson plans for camp activities.
    • Facilitates indoor and outdoor camp activities including science experiments, art projects, games, and explorations of the National Aviary and surrounding park area.
    • Monitors the well-being and social interaction of campers, working closely with the Program Specialist and Education Curator to quickly address issues in a manner that is fair, caring, and respectful of the needs of all campers.
    • Ensures that National Aviary Summer Camp policies, SOPs, and camper behavior expectations are followed.
    • Communicates with camper caregivers, providing excellent customer service.
    • Prepares and organizes materials for camp programs .
    • Participates in training before the start of camp and throughout the summer.
    • Serves as a member of the Education team through regular communication and collaboration, supporting other team members and attending meetings as needed.
    • Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    This position requires an ability to lead groups of campers throughout National Aviary habitats, often maneuvering through crowds. An ability to lift and carry camp materials and move classroom furniture is necessary. Camp takes place inside National Aviary classrooms and habitats, as well as outdoors and an ability to spend time outdoors in summer temperatures is necessary.

    Work environments will include climate-controlled office spaces, public areas where the noise level may be loud, and outdoors where work may need to be done in inclement weather conditions, including extremes of temperature and precipitation.     POSITION TYPE/ EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

    This is a full-time seasonal position.  The candidate must be able to work Monday-Friday for the duration of the camp season (June 3 – August 12, 2025)

  • Registrar (Full-time)

    SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

    The Registrar maintains the official inventory of the National Aviary’s Animal Collection. This position coordinates the National Aviary’s centralized record of animal births, deaths, acquisitions and transfers and behavior, utilizing relevant animal databases. This position also coordinates animal transactions with other institutions, carriers, and appropriate regulatory bodies. They provide information regarding animal breeding, ancestry, diet, behavior, and training for internal and external research and other purposes.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manages and maintains both active and inactive animal records systems, ensuring data quality, appropriate retention, preservation and accessibility in compliance with AZA standards.
    • Acquires and manages all local, federal, and state animal collection permits and licenses.
    • Collaborates with Veterinary Department on all animal transfers.
    • Coordinates all animal transfers and related paperwork.
    • Maintains and preps supply of animal shipment crates
    • Transports animals to and from airport and other zoos as needed.
    • Responsible for tracking all animal transfers in airline transit to insure transfers arrive at designated airports and expected arrival times.
    • Compiles and distributes daily report to Animal Collections and Animal Programs.
    • Manages animal census/ inventory process.
    • Organizes and maintains animal care manuals, transfer plans, and other related documents related to collection management.
    • Provides periodic updates to appropriate SSP coordinators and stud bookkeepers.
    • Serves as administrator of animal records database and primary liaison between National Aviary and animal records software vendors.
    • Maintain understanding of USDA inspection guidelines
    • Maintains documents and records needed for USDA inspection.
    • Disseminates Animal Collection information to other National Aviary departments as requested and in a timely fashion.
    • Maintains understanding and awareness of current industry recommendations related to animal record keeping.
    • Makes recommendations to improve record keeping practices for the collection.
    • Assists animal care staff with data collection, compilation and/or assessment as needed.
    • Assist Director of Animal Care, as needed, in conservation grant recruitment and preparation process. 
    • Maintains an understanding of the principles that underlie animal welfare in the zoological field and supports the National Aviary’s Animal Welfare Program.
    • Assists with animal care routines and education programs as needed.
    • Assists with animal trapping and animal introduction observations as needed
    • Maintains good relationships with fellow registrars at other zoos and aquariums.
    • Adheres to all National Aviary protocols and procedures.
    • Interacts with visitors utilizing National Aviary Visitor Engagement protocol.
